Returning to Harvard University, he graduated with an M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1980. In 1981 he was accepted at yet another Harvard Institution, the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, where he pursued a three year ophthalmology residency, followed by a fellowship in diseases and surgery of the retina and vitreous.
