1. Get Regular Check Ups to Catch Problems

Seeing your eye doctor regularly is the best way to protect the health of your eyes. Go every two or so years until age 60 and annually thereafter.

2. Wear Proper Eye Protection and Avoid Injury

Just like you wear sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun’s rays, you should keep a pair of sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection handy to protect your eyes! And don’t forget about protective eye wear while doing hazardous tasks or playing high impact sports.

3. Stay Away from Tobacco and Alcohol

Did you know that tobacco and alcohol use can damage your vision? Smoking increases the risk of developing cataracts more than three times and macular degeneration more than 2.5 times. Drinking more than one alcoholic drink per day can increase your risk for cataracts two to four times.

4. Eat Healthy and Exercise to Reduce Risk

Eating healthy can provide your eyes the vitamins and minerals they need to do their job best. Regular exercise can reduce your risk of glaucoma or macular degeneration.

5. Take a Break from Your Computer Screen!

If you spend a lot of time working on a computer screen or anything that requires prolonged close focus, make sure to look up from the screen and give your eyes a break once in a while. Taking a few moments to look around the room occasionally can help maintain your vision and help prevent headaches!
