Opening Christmas Presents Safely
By: Jeffrey Colburn, MD
There are not many things more exciting in childhood than opening presents. Especially Christmas presents! But there is some danger also, especially to the eyes. Scissors or knives could cause severe eye damage if the child slips while using them. As a child, I personally had a friend who had suffered a severe eye injury and permanent vision loss in one eye as a result of hitting the eye with scissors while attempting to open a gift.
With this danger in mind, please keep the following tips in mind:
1. Do not allow younger children to use scissors or other sharp instruments while opening presents.
2. Have only blunt tipped scissors in reach of children.
3. Educate older children on the proper use of scissors and supervise their use. Cutting should always be done in a direction away from oneself.
Wishing you and yours a wonderful and safe Christmas!
