History of Spokane Eye Clinic Pediatric Ophthalmology
We are thrilled to be able to continue on the legacy of the longest serving pediatric ophthalmology department in the region. Here is a list of highlights from our history:
1955 - The Spokane Eye Clinic (SEC) is founded as Dr. Maher and Dr. Gates join their individual practices together.
1966 - Ms. Marilyn Westerman, orthoptist, begins work at the SEC working with kids and doing eye muscle measurements.
1978 - Dr. Jeff Snow finishes his fellowship training at Oregon Health Sciences University. He joins the Valley Mission Eye Clinic and becomes the first fellowship trained pediatric ophthalmologist in Spokane.
1981 - Dr. Stephen Maher (son of the founding partner) completes his fellowship training at Indiana University and joins the SEC as its first fellowship trained pediatric ophthalmologist.
1990 - Dr. Snow joins the SEC when the Valley Mission Eye Clinic merges with the SEC.
2010 - Dr. Jeffrey Colburn arrives at the SEC to start the next generation of pediatric ophthalmology. He completed his fellowship training at Indiana University as did Dr. Maher.
2011 - Dr. Jeff Snow retires from clinical practice after 33 years in Spokane.
2013 - Dr. Stephen Maher retires from the SEC after 32 years in clinical practice.
2014 - Ms. Marilyn Westerman retires from clinical practice after nearly 40 years working as our orthoptist at SEC!
2016 - Dr. Matt Weed completes his fellowship training at the University of Iowa and arrives at the SEC to join Dr. Colburn as our pediatric department continues to grow.
2017 - Ms. Felicia Korpi will join the SEC to fill the role of orthoptist assisting Drs. Colburn & Weed with advanced eye muscle measurements and treatment of amblyopia & strabismus.
